Marking 10 years of Wetherby and District Foodbank

12th June 2024

Volunteers' Week & 10th Anniversary

Last week was National Volunteers’ Week, a week in which to celebrate the fantastic contributions volunteers make to communities up and down the country. For charities like ours, the week is an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and thank our volunteers for all that they do. This year was an extra special one for us as we mark the 10th Anniversary of Wetherby and District Foodbank. Whilst the fact that foodbanks need to exist at all is most definitely not a cause for celebration, the hard work and hours of time freely given over the last ten years by trustees and volunteers alike most definitely IS worth celebrating.

We marked the occasion by inviting volunteers and trustees past and present to a barbeque at Walton Village Hall. The hall looked fantastic and the themed balloon displays donated by The Balloon Stop looked incredible! We had meat donated by Sykes House Farm Ltd, the BBQ was very kindly manned by Alan Lamb and Rachel from Black Door Social was on hand to take plenty of photos.

It was a lovely event and a wonderful opportunity to get together with volunteers old and new and to show our appreciation for the many hours of time, effort and dedication they have contributed over the years. We heard from Norma Harrington and ex-Chair of Trustees, Neil Ripley about the early days of the foodbank and the planning and work that went into setting it up. Part of that story includes the help and support we’ve recieved from local businesses, churches, supermarkets, groups, clubs and individuals from all across the community. The local churches and Sykes House Farm in particular have supported us from the very beginning. We thank you all!
