Support from Local Schools

3rd February 2025

Our foodbank is supported by many different local groups, including a wide range of our local schools and colleges. The way in which schools support us is varied: from ‘Bring a Tin Tuesdays’ at primary schools to Christmas food collections at secondary schools; or maybe hosting our foodbank coordinator, Jenny Firth, for a special Foodbank-themed assembly or even organising a visit to our warehouse.

Visiting our warehouse helps the pupils find out more about how and why a foodbank operates while also getting involved with some of the sorting and dating of food that goes on during our twice-weekly volunteer shifts.

One of the schools that visits regularly is West Oaks SEN School. A few of their older students come along each week to get some hands-on experience of warehouse work. They are accompanied by a teacher and each week a couple of our volunteers attend to guide them as needed through the regular tasks.

The students work at a pace they feel comfortable with, gain valuable task-based experience for their learning logs and meet new people. For us, we get some extra help with dating and sorting while having new faces with whom to share a cuppa, a biscuit and a chat at break time!
