Could you be a Foodbank Trustee?

21st March 2024

Several of our trustees will be stepping down in the coming months as they reach the end of their agreed terms. This means we are currently looking for some new trustees to take their place.

What does a Trustee do?

The principle purpose of trustees is to ensure good governance of a charity. Trustees will use their skills and experience to make sure that the day-to-day operation and future planning adhere to the charity’s aims.

At Wetherby and District Foodbank we have three key aims:

  1. To provide food to local people in crisis.
  2. To work alongside other foodbanks, agents, charities and organisations to distribute any surplus food items and essentials to where they are needed.
  3. To avoid waste and honour our donors by ensuring all donations reach people experiencing hardship and need.

What does being a Wetherby and District Foodbank Trustee involve?

On a practical level this involves attending monthly trustee meetings, usually on the second Monday of each month for around two hours. These meetings take place at our warehouse in Thorp Arch. During this meeting the progress, legal obligations and potential risks of our organisation are assessed and any necessary long-term or short-term decisions are made. All trustees have a statutory responsibility and are accountable, similar to a company director. Some trustees take on additional duties such as oversight of safeguarding, financial or acting as the chairperson.

You can find out  more about the role of a trustee on the government website here.
